What Will You Learn?
Our chemistry major and minor provides students with a thorough
education in the fundamental processes of the chemical world to
foster creative and critical thinking. The curriculum will
introduce you to an understanding of chemical phenomena,
structure, properties and transformations from the atomic and
molecular level to the macroscopic level. Foundational courses
include analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, and physical
chemistry, all with state-of-the-art laboratories. Elective
courses explore topics in atmospheric, bio-inorganic,
bio-organic, environmental, materials, and medicinal chemistry,
in addition to chemical biology and nanotechnology. Additional
elective courses may also be taken. The Chemistry Department of
Vedanta College provides coordinated programs of studies in all
of the fundamental fields of chemistry. In our classrooms and
teaching labs, students learn directly from faculties committed
to undergraduate education. In our research labs, students and
faculty work together on groundbreaking scientific problems. A
collegial and supportive environment distinguishes our
student-faculty interaction in many contexts: the classroom,
course laboratories, and in student/faculty collaborative
research projects, which are often disseminated within the
broader scientific community. The Chemistry Department occupies
the well-equipped Chemistry Laboratory, where you will work with
modern instrumentation and software.
Learning Outcome
As a chemistry graduate, you could be another face in the crowd.
You’ll work closely with your professors, who are just as
passionate about science as you are, and are dedicated to
helping you craft your path to success. Engaging hands-on
experience is at the heart of this program. You’ll handle
state-of-the-art instrumentation and software. You love the
scientific method: the logical structure, the trial and error,
the quest for knowledge as you solve mysteries and discover
solutions. Our chemistry program will help you build a solid
foundation that will support you as you pursue a career in the
sciences. You will grow and flourish as a scientist as you
conduct your own research projects with help and support from
your faculty mentors. Our courses lead students from a wide
variety of secondary school science backgrounds rapidly into
advanced levels, and develop a foundation and perspective for
research activities and an awareness of contemporary chemistry.
All members of the faculty are available to students for
assistance and guidance regarding their progress and their plans
for the future.
Career Opportunities
Program graduates gain new analytical and critical thinking
skills to enhance their communication abilities. These skills
are valuable in any career field. Chemistry has been called the
"central science," because it connects to so many areas of
scientific inquiry. Therefore graduates can work at the
intersections of chemistry with biology, physics, and materials
science and having connections to solar energy, catalysis, and
fundamental investigations into molecular properties.
